Begun in 1981 as a way to showcase the succulent goodness of cantaloupes grown locally in beautiful Halifax County, the Virginia Cantaloupe Festival has expanded to become one of the premier events in Virginia.
Ted Bennett was the Chairperson for the 1st Annual Virginia Cantaloupe Festival in 1981. The cantaloupe festival concept was conceived by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
The Turbeville Cantaloupe Growers co-sponsored the Cantaloupe Festival with the help of the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce. Kneeling from left to right: Bob Long and Hilton Hudson. Within two years of it's inception, the festival was drawing crowds of more than 3500 people. People of all ages from all walks of life come to the festival each year helping to add variety to the event.
